Singapore – 26 June, 2009. Yellowren Productions hosted the finale of “Yellow Mic Song Writing Competition 2009” with its first “Yellow Mic Performance Nite” at Evangel Family Church.
This is the first song writing competition co-organised by Yellowren Productions
with Evangel Family Church, launched on 7 March 2009. “Yellow Mic Song
Writing Competition” aims to encourage and inspire new and aspiring songwriters
to write new songs that would bring Contemporary/Worship Chinese Christian
Music to a higher level and connect our Mandarin Speaking Community to the
cross. The competition was opened to members of Evangel Family Church and
participants were required to submit their compositions by 22 May 2009. 7
finalists were then short-listed for “Yellow Mic Performance Nite” to showcase
their song composition. The panel of judges for the event includes Yellowren
trio (Chan Mong Yee, Zhang Zhi Gang and Dayna Lim) and their Music Director,
Mr Ricky Ho.
The Performance Nite was well attended with a rapturous crowd of audience and supporters. Amidst the anxiety and nervousness of composers and performers, the event started on the right note with a wonderful praise and worship, followed by a candid and uplifting devotion from Dayna Lim. The audience were also delighted with Mong Yee’s rendition of “You Are” accompanied by Mr Ricky Ho on the keyboard, her first composition written ten years ago, which was recorded in Yellowren’s first album, "For You". The panel of judges was introduced to the audience and Chee Kong then presented the judging criteria. The event was further spiced up with the humorous antics of our animated duo, Ting Chun and Gerald Ling who did a fantastic job in being hosts of the event, to introduce the composers, their performers and the song. The contestants were quizzed on various topics such as who they think will be their strongest competitors, what they would do with their prize money should they win and the people they would like to thank.
The 7 finalists of the “Yellow Mic Song Writing Competition 2009” are David
Lee, Alvin Lee, Michelle Ng, Dorothy Kang, Lee Wen Yi, Joel Tan and
Ricky Chia. Each participant gave a brief introduction of themselves and
the songs they had written. Composers David Lee, Michelle Ng and Ricky Chia
chose to perform their own songs while others relied on the vocal talents
of others. Khong Li Lin, Trina Lim & Neo Shu Tin, joined Alvin on stage.
Olivia Woon sang for Dorothy and Nah Kok Peng sang for Joel Tan. However,
the best performer of the night went to Joelle Tan with her perfect-pitch
rendition of Lee Wen Yi’s composition. All the audience and the judges greatly
appreciated the songs and performances of all the finalists. It was a nail-biting
moment when the winning results were announced with three remaining composers
on stage. Our heartiest congratulations to David Lee (1st Prize), Lee Wen
Yi (2nd Prize) and Dorothy Kang (3rd Prize) for being winners of the “Yellow
Mic Song Writing Competition 2009.”
